More than a decade ago, I ditched hourly billing and implemented flat fee pricing. Our clients pay their entire fee up front, and new money doesn’t come in until more agreements are signed.

The first day of every month becomes financial zero day. We start with nothing. It’s terrifying.

Inside, I know that something will come in, but I don’t always know where it’s coming from. Part of the fear is what makes fixed fees work. It’s a motivator.

It might not be healthy, but it drives the process forward. This is how I deal with the stress.
